How to Install a Chalk and Magnet Wall Sticker

Installing your Chalk and Magnet Wall Sticker is simple, but taking your time will give you the smoothest result.

This magnetic chalkboard installation guide explains how to prepare the board, check your surface and apply it in manageable sections without bubbles or creases.

Before installation: allow it to flatten

Carefully unroll your Chalk and Magnet Wall Sticker and lay it flat for at least 24 hours before installation.

This allows the material to relax after being rolled for delivery, making it easier to position and smooth onto the surface. Keep it somewhere clean and dry where it will not be stepped on or damaged.

What you’ll need

  • Your Chalk and Magnet Wall Sticker
  • The supplied test piece
  • The supplied smoothing tool
  • A clean, dry surface
  • A tape measure, pencil and spirit level, if needed
  • A second pair of hands, if you would find this helpful

You may not need to measure if you have a straight line to follow, such as the edge of a wardrobe, door frame or skirting board.

If you are positioning the board in the middle of a wall, measuring first will help you make sure it looks straight.

Step 1: Check the surface

The wall sticker should be applied to a suitable smooth, clean and fully cured surface. Suitable surfaces may include:

  • Smooth, suitably painted walls
  • Glass or mirrors
  • Smooth, non-textured doors
  • Smooth wardrobe doors

Freshly painted walls may feel dry before the paint has cured completely. Follow the paint manufacturer’s curing guidance before applying an adhesive product. This may take several weeks rather than a few days.

Some glossy, satin, semi-gloss or specialist low-VOC paints may not be suitable. Textured walls and wallpaper should also be avoided, as they may not provide a reliable surface for the adhesive.

Before installation, make sure the area is clean, dry and free from dust, grease or cleaning-product residue.

Step 2: Plan the position

Decide where you would like the board to sit before removing the backing.

If you are placing it above the skirting board or beside a wardrobe, you can use the existing straight edge as your guide.

If you are installing it in the middle of a wall, use a tape measure and spirit level to check the position. Mark the placement lightly with a pencil if needed.

For a child’s play area, position the bottom of the board where your child can comfortably reach it.

Stand back and check the placement before beginning the application.

Step 3: Position the bottom section

Begin at the bottom of the wall sticker.

Peel approximately one-third or half of the backing sheet away. Choose whichever amount feels easier for you to control, but do not remove the entire backing at once.

Carefully align the bottom edge with your chosen guide. Once you are happy that the board looks straight, lightly press the first section onto the surface.

Step 4: Smooth the first section

Use the supplied smoothing tool to apply the exposed section gradually.

Smooth from the centre outward toward the edges, working carefully to push out any trapped air. This is the best way to apply a wall sticker without bubbles.

Before continuing, check that:

  • The board is still straight
  • The applied section looks smooth
  • There are no bubbles or creases
  • The edges are adhering properly

If you notice a bubble, gently guide the air toward the nearest edge using the smoothing tool.

Step 5: Apply the rest of the board

Once the first section looks smooth, slowly peel away more of the backing and continue the same process.

You can install the board in two halves or work in smaller one-third sections. The important thing is to expose only as much adhesive as you can comfortably control.

Continue smoothing from the centre toward the edges as you go. Avoid allowing the unapplied section to fall against the wall before you are ready.

When the full board is in place, smooth over the entire surface once more, paying particular attention to the edges.

Repositioning or removing it later

If you need to remove the wall sticker, begin at one corner and peel it back slowly at a low angle. Avoid pulling it directly away from the wall.

Keep the original backing sheet if you may want to store or reposition the board later.

The sticker is intended for occasional repositioning. Repeated removal may reduce the strength of the adhesive. Paints and surfaces vary, so completely damage-free removal cannot be guaranteed.

Quick answers

Do I need to leave the board flat before installation?

Yes. Unroll it and leave it lying flat for at least 24 hours before installing it.

Do I need a tape measure and spirit level?

Only if you do not have a straight edge to follow or you are positioning the board in the middle of a wall.

Should I remove all the backing at once?

No. Apply the board in halves or one-third sections so that you can keep control of the position and smooth out bubbles as you work.

Can I install it on a textured wall?

We recommend a smooth, clean surface, so the board final result looks nice and smooth too.
