Full-Wrap vs. Insert Placemat: Which Fits Your Setup?

Both protect the IKEA Antilop tray from spills, scratches and daily wear. So what's actually different, and which one suits your mealtimes? Here's the honest breakdown.

Full wrap IKEA Antilop placemat compared with a tray insert placemat

What's a full-wrap placemat?

Exactly what it sounds like, silicone that covers the entire tray, edge to edge. Maximum coverage, maximum mess protection, and nothing on the tray itself left exposed to spills, scratches or stains.

What's an insert placemat?

A more minimalist option that covers the main eating area of the tray rather than the whole surface. Less material, a slightly more understated look, and still plenty of protection where the mess actually happens, right under the plate or bowl.

Which should you choose?

Go full-wrap if:

  • Your little one is a messy eater who spreads food well beyond the plate
  • Full coverage means one less thing to worry about
  • You want the tray fully protected from scratches long-term, not just the eating zone

Go insert if:

  • You like the look of a bit of the tray showing round the edges
  • Your baby's mess tends to stay fairly contained to the plate area
  • You're happy wiping the tray edges yourself occasionally, in exchange for a lighter-weight mat

Both work brilliantly with suction bowls and plates

Whichever you choose, the smooth silicone surface is designed to let suction-based dinnerware grip properly, so your suction bowls and plates stay put either way.

A quick honest note on stick

Neither type sticks to the tray on its own. If you'd like a bit of extra grip, a small amount of water underneath the mat helps it hold in place better during mealtimes.

Colours

We make ours in a range of shades: Sage Green, Cream, Peach, Cool Grey, Velvet Black, Taupe, Hunter Green and Berry. So you can match your placemat to your cushion cover or leg wraps for a coordinated look.

Caring for either type

Both are just as easy to clean: rinse in the sink with soapy water, or pop it straight in the dishwasher for a deeper clean. Avoid harsh chemicals to protect the silicone.

Quick answers

Are these safe for my baby?

Yes, 100% food-grade, BPA-free silicone, free from phthalates and other harsh chemicals.

Will these fit a highchair other than the IKEA Antilop?

No, ours are designed specifically to fit the IKEA Antilop tray.

What if it stains?

Silicone is highly stain-resistant, but some foods can leave a temporary mark. Soaking overnight in warm water helps or a few hours in the sun can speed up fading. Just note that prolonged sun exposure may fade the colour slightly too.
